Mapping the Code: A Progression from Phonemic Awareness to Spelling Proficiency

This two-part webinar series explores how students move from early phonemic awareness to advanced spelling through explicit, systematic instruction. Grounded in Dr. Linnea Ehri’s Phases of Reading, these sessions highlight principles of effective teaching, examine student writing, and offer practical tools to guide students along the continuum from phoneme-grapheme mapping to orthographic proficiency.

Part 1: Practical Tools for Phoneme-Grapheme Mapping

In Part 1, participants will connect Ehri’s Phases of Reading to the development of phoneme-grapheme knowledge and explore why explicit instruction is critical for building automatic word recognition. Participants will:

  • gain an understanding of how Ehri’s Phases of Reading connect to learning phoneme-grapheme correspondences.
  • examine student writing samples that illustrate movement across phases.
  • observe a modeled phoneme-grapheme mapping routine featuring sound boxes and encoding practice.

Participants will leave with practical strategies, free resources, and an understanding of how to guide students from the Partial to Full Alphabetic Phase.

Topic: Reading, Writing
