Comprehensive Orton-Gillingham Plus Training

30 Hours

The IMSE Impact Comprehensive Orton-Gillingham Plus Course and Program is 30-hours of a hands-on, interactive, and personalized class that provides a complete understanding of IMSE’s enhanced Orton-Gillingham method, the essential five components to literacy, and the tools necessary to apply it in the classroom.

After participating in this accredited Structured Literacy course, teachers will understand the structure and foundation of the English language as well as the research behind the Science of Reading.  Educators will have a basic knowledge of how to assess and teach students in all three tiers of RTI as well as students with dyslexia. 

This Course Is For

General and special education teachers K-2 in addition to grades 3rd and beyond whose students require instruction in word recognition skills (e.g., phonology, decoding, spelling). This course can also be taken by any educator who wants to learn more about instruction in phonology and orthography.

Participants Will
  • Gain knowledge of the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy
  • Gain knowledge about students with reading difficulties such as dyslexia
  • Understand how EL students can best learn English
  • Identify and administer various types of assessments
  • Implement and create structured literacy lessons

If you’re not ready to commit to the entire 30-hour course, you can take Part 1 of the Comprehensive OG+ course.

Part 1: 
This 3-day, 18-hour course is Part 1 of IMSE’s 5-day Comprehensive OG+ course. It is designed for kindergarten and first-grade general education teachers, special education teachers, literacy coaches, and interventionists who work with students at this level. This training provides a comprehensive exploration of beginning foundational phonics instruction grounded in IMSE’s Orton-Gillingham program. It is not required to take Part 2 when choosing this course, but if you do choose to take it, it must be completed within 60 days of Part 1.

Part 2: 
This two-day course is Part 2 of IMSE’s five-day Comprehensive OG+ course. Participants must have taken Part 1 to take Part 2. It is designed for first—and second-grade general education teachers, special education teachers, literacy coaches, and interventionists who will work with students at this level. This training provides a comprehensive exploration of remaining foundational phonics instruction grounded in IMSE’s Orton-Gillingham program. Over two days, you will enhance your understanding and implementation of advanced phonics instruction strategies tailored to meet students' evolving needs.

Participants who decide to take Part 2 must take the course within 60 days of taking Part 1.
 

 

The Comprehensive OG Plus, along with the other IMSE Impact Courses, and the
IMSE Practicum will help teachers prepare to take the Center for Effective Reading
Instruction (CERI) Knowledge and Practice Examination for Effective Reading Instruction
(KPEERI) to obtain a Structured Literacy (SLCT) Classroom Teacher Certificate. CERI is a
subsidiary of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA).

Participants Will Evaluate and Teach Students

Phonological Awareness | the awareness that words are composed of sounds and those sounds have distinct articulatory features

Phonics | the ability to recognize letter-sound relationships in words

Fluency | the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression

Vocabulary | size and word-meaning strategies predict comprehension

Comprehension | understanding the meaning of text and integrating it with previous knowledge

Word Recognition | the ability to see a word and recognize its pronunciation without any conscious effort

Spelling | the process or activity of writing or naming the letters of a word

Writing | the activity of marking coherent words on paper and composing text


This course includes an additional asynchronous component for fluency, vocabulary, and
comprehension. The Comprehensive OG Plus course is appropriate for teachers whose
students are emergent and beginning readers and readers struggling in word recognition.
Upon completion of this course, teachers are eligible to purchase 2 graduate credits.
