Mapping the Code: A Progression from Phonemic Awareness to Spelling Proficiency

This two-part webinar series explores how students move from early phonemic awareness to advanced spelling through explicit, systematic instruction. Grounded in Dr. Linnea Ehri’s Phases of Reading, these sessions highlight principles of effective teaching, examine student writing, and offer practical tools to guide students along the continuum from phoneme-grapheme mapping to orthographic proficiency.

Part 2: Expanding Orthographic Proficiency: Syllables and Morphemes

Part 2 builds on the foundations of Part 1 by focusing on orthographic knowledge at the syllable and morpheme level. Participants will:

  • examine how students transition from the Full to Consolidated Alphabetic Phase.

  • learn to identify types of spelling errors (phonological, orthographic, morphological).

  • practice routines for developing an understanding of morphemic awareness  through word sums.

This session emphasizes the instructional power of explicit, systematic teaching of morphemes and syllables to help students unitize spelling patterns and deepen their orthographic knowledge.
